Is balsamic vinegar and red wine vinegar the same?
Since many salads call for balsamic vinegar or red wine vinegar, I know some may wonder if these two are the same.
The fact remains simple, balsamic vinegar and red wine vinegar are not the same. Each provides you a different flavor based on having been fermented somewhat differently.
Red wine vinegar has a shorter fermentation time than balsamic vinegar. You’ll find that the flavor for your balsamic vinegar tastes sweeter and fruitier than red wine vinegar.
I use red wine vinegar for my tomato-cucumber salad because it provides that mellow flavor I enjoy when mixing tomatoes and cucumbers together for a salad.

- I like my salad this way but for those with a bit of sweet tooth, feel free to add about a half teaspoon of sugar for that hint of sweetness.
- Try not to cut the cucumber paper-thin otherwise, they will become soggy.
- Please note that a little onion goes a long way. Too much will overwhelm the salad and if you don’t like the pungency of the onions feel free to soak the onions in cold water for 10 minutes before adding it to the salad.
- Lettuce can also be added to the salad it will add more texture to the salad. However, you will need to finish it up the same day because the lettuce will wilt and get soggy the next day.
- The cucumber, onion, and tomato will be fine in the fridge for a day or two. It makes a great side to any grilled meat or fish like Pan-seared Tilapia Fish, Oven-Baked Salmon, etc. The lemon juice is so bright, fresh and makes this salad addictive. It’s extremely healthy, so you can eat as much as you want. Try this simple salad and let me know how you like it.
