What is Fry Sauce?

Fry sauce is half mayonnaise and half ketchup as the base ingredient combined with spices, seasonings, and other ingredients. It’s a perfect blend of sweet, creamy, tangy, and spicy. My fried chicken is never complete without a complementary sauce, and I have never regretted making this fry sauce. You can’t resist this fry sauce if you are a dipper like me.

With very few ingredients, short prep time, and simple procedures, you can make this delicious recipe for your family. The interesting fact is that there are other options available to customize it just as you like.

A Little History

Fry sauce is originally a French sauce from Utah. It was popular in the chain arctic circle restaurant in the 1940s. It used to be a regional recipe, but it has now become a popular sauce worldwide. You will find ready-made fry sauce at the grocery, or you can make your own in under 5 minutes.

To be honest, there are other delicious sauces like Fish taco sauce and Honey Mustard, but this fry sauce is versatile and perfect for almost everything. If you try it with Baked potato wedges or French fries, you will keep coming back for more.

Fry Sauce Ingredients

Hands down, fry sauce is one of my favorite dipping sauces. It requires a few ingredients, and it is easy to put together. See the ingredients below:

  • Full-fat mayonnaise – this is a major ingredient for fry sauce. It makes the sauce creamy. If you don’t like mayo, you can substitute it.
  • Ketchup – adds to the sweetness of the sauce. It also gives the sauce its color.
  • Smoked paprika – bring on the smoky flavor, and add some heat and color to the sauce.
  • Garlic powder – you can trust garlic for that garlicky flavor.
  • Hot sauce or cayenne pepper – for a bit of kick.
  • Apple cider vinegar or pickle brine – this ingredient supplies the tangy taste that the sauce has.
  • Salt to taste

How to Make Fry Sauce Recipe

  • In a mixing bowl, combine mayonnaise, ketchup, smoked paprika, garlic powder, cayenne pepper, and apple cider vinegar.
  • Mix and stir all ingredients together, then adjust for salt if needed.
  • Refrigerate the sauce for 30 minutes before serving, or use it immediately if you can’t wait.

Customize it your way

The interesting thing about this recipe is that you can play around with the ingredients to create your fry sauce. You can customize your mayo, heat, spiciness, sweetness, and tanginess.

Use the following idea to make your own.

  • Mayonnaise – Although mayo gives this recipe a thick, creamy and rich texture, not everyone likes mayo. You can go for light mayonnaise instead of full-fat mayo if you are on a diet. You can use veganaise mayonnaise or miracle whip if you are a vegan.
  • Heat – I have added hot sauce to this recipe. You can use cayenne pepper, red flakes, or tabasco sauce instead. You can either reduce or increase the hot sauce; feel free to make it as spicy as you want.
  • Spiciness – Play around with the spice by adding onion powder or black pepper. Either smoked or regular paprika, you’ll be ok with any. For extra flavor, you can start with a dash of your chosen spice and keep tasting until you get to the depth you want.
  • Define your tanginess – You can use apple cider vinegar, pickle juice, or lemon juice.
  • Mustard – Mustard isn’t a bad idea. It is optional, but you can add it to deepen the flavor. Plain yellow mustard will work well.

How long does Fry Sauce Last? I will always recommend homemade fry sauce because it is always fresh for dipping. However, this homemade fry sauce will only last for a week in the fridge. The ready-made fry sauce sold at the grocery store can last a few years.

Must I use mayonnaise? Mayonnaise is one of the essential ingredients in this recipe, so it is important. If you substitute mayo, the fry sauce will change. Nevertheless, you can still reduce the mayonnaise and use any substitute you prefer.

Asides from this, it gives a savory and creamy satisfaction. This version features hot sauce for a touch of heat. You can leave out the hot sauce or use less if you want less heat.

How to store leftover fry sauce

Do you want to make excess? Why not. You can store leftover fry sauce in a jar or any airtight container and keep it in the fridge. It will last up to a week (7 days). Use it cold and enjoy the amazing flavor.

I know that the ingredient usually separates after storing; this is not a bad sign as long as it is within 1 week of making it. Just stir it before serving again. Note that it won’t last long if there are multiple dippers or if you store it on the kitchen countertop.
