I’m a big fan of sweet potatoes. I love their taste – they are a vegetable but can taste like dessert. I also love their texture, and how easy they are to cook plus, they are nutritious and filling. If you’ve never eaten them before, then you should try some of these:
Baked sweet potatoes are one of the simplest foods you will ever make. It is a warming and comforting food perfect for all seasons. This recipe is ideal for busy weeknights after a long day at work. In addition, it uses 3 ingredients and minimal effort.
When it comes to sweet potatoes, they can be enjoyed any time of the year, even if the bright orange-hued tuber conjures up memories of thanksgivings and the fall season!
Keep it simple!
With their soft and fluffy baked insides, sweet potatoes have a naturally sweet taste. You can keep them sweet or turn them savory, depending on what you pair them with.
It’s just one of those things that doesn’t need a lot of embellishing. You don’t need to eat them doused in marshmallows and brown sugar to make them taste good. Baked sweet potatoes are delicious with nothing on them. As a matter of fact, they’re delicious even with butter or sour cream.
Adding a small pat of butter, a sprinkle of salt, and a crack of coarse ground pepper is one of my favorite ways to serve them.
As a side meal, it is versatile and complements just any meal.

- Sweet potatoes: Ensure you select a spotless potato with uniformly bright skin. Watch out for soft mold that signifies bad tuber.
- Butter: the butter makes the body’s crispy and puffy interior moist.
- Salt and pepper: add the salt and pepper to taste; do not skip.
How to Bake Sweet Potato perfectly
There are different methods for baking sweet potatoes. You can use the oven or air fryer. Follow these fail-proof methods for crispy baked sweet potatoes.
- Scrub and wash the potatoes: Scrub sweet potatoes, wash and pat them dry, and prick them all over with a fork or a paring knife.
- oven method: Place them on a baking tray and bake until tender, about 45 to 50 minutes.
- Air fryer method: Place the sweet potatoes in the basket of the air fryer and air fry at 380 °F for 40 to 45 minutes or until they are tender, turning halfway through.
- Leave to cool for about 10 minutes; split the top open with a knife, top with butter, and season with salt and pepper.
- You can also top as desired.
Potato Baking Tips
- Don’t forget to scrub the skin to remove all the dirt.
- Cook similar potato sizes so they can get done at the same rate.
- I didn’t use foil for baking my sweet potatoes. I have noticed that using foil makes the skin boil, moist, and sometimes slimy. I love them with crispy skin, so I place them bare on the baking tray.

We can’t deny that baked sweet potato with pepper, butter, and salt is incredibly delicious. However, you can pair it with veggies, protein, and different sauces to make a full meal.

Do you know that you can bake sweet potatoes ahead? Make it ahead, store and reheat it when you are ready to make up for busy weekdays. Store as follows:
- Refrigerate: Keep in an airtight container and store in the refrigerator for 4-5 days.
- Freeze: It will last for 4 -5 months in the freezer if you keep it correctly in an airtight container.
- Reheat: The best way to reheat sweet potatoes is to bake them for 15-20 minutes at 275 degrees or microwave them in half.

- Place them on a baking tray and roast at 425F preheated oven for 45 to 50 minutes, or until they're tender and a fork can easily pierce the potato.
Air fryer method:
- Place them in the basket of the air fryer, and air fry them at 380F for 40 to 45 minutes or until they are puffed and tender on the inside when pierced with a fork.
- Leave to cool for about 10 minutes; split the top open with a knife, top with butter, and season with salt and pepper.
