AFRICAN RECIPES – Let your family experience a taste of “motherland” cuisine. With these recipes, you will be able to make a dish that will leave their taste buds wanting more! 


A huge number of recipes are known and shared from generation to generation in Africa. The wide variety of African recipes comes from the cultural diversity across the continent, as each tribe has its own unique culinary heritage and traditions.

African cuisine is very diverse, with regional differences in the preparation and use of spices, flavors, and cooking techniques. This African recipe collection will introduce you to the rich food culture of African people. Here are some of the most common African dishes that you should definitely try.


1- WEST AFRICAN FUFU Fufu is a very famous African dish that originated in West Africa, specifically Nigeria and Ghana. If you follow these step-by-step instructions, you can make delicious fufu right in your own kitchen, just like in the motherland!

2- SUKUMA WIKI | AFRICAN BRAISED COLLARD GREENS – one of my favorite dishes is sukuma wiki. It’s a staple in many East African homes. Best of all, its ingredients are cheap and easy to find.

3- SADZA – UGALI (AFRICAN CORNMEAL) – Sadza, also referred to as Ugali in Kenya, is a staple food, particularly throughout Southern Africa. Sadza can be eaten with vegetables or topped with meat or fish and sauce. If you’re looking to learn how to make Sadza-Ugali, read on to discover the simple steps you need to follow!

4- INJERA– Injera is Ethiopian sourdough bread traditionally made with teff flour. It looks similar to a crepe or a Mexican tortilla, however, it is completely free.

5- EAST AFRICAN PILAU-KENYAN PILAU – East African Pilau (or Kenyan pilau) is one of the most popular ways to serve rice in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. It’s a simple dish made with rice and stock with ginger, garlic, and cumin added to the mix. It tastes great on its own or with any meat or vegetable side dish you can think of.

6- SIMPLE AFRICAN CHICKEN PEPPER SOUP – The recipe for a delicious chicken pepper soup from West Africa. Rich, warming, and nutritious, you’ll love serving it up on chilly evenings with fresh crusty bread.

7- AFRICAN LEMON GINGER TEA – Traditional African Lemon Ginger Tea includes the zesty flavor of lemon and the warmth of ginger. This recipe is a perfect addition to your collection. Give it a try!

8- AFRICAN IRIO (MASHED POTATOES, CORN, AND PEAS) – African Irio is a type of African dish that is commonly served as a side dish. It consists of mashed potatoes, corn, and peas. This recipe is easy to make with ingredients that are found in most kitchens. Give it a try!

9- EAST AFRICAN CHAPATI – Discover the world with the East African Chapati Recipe – This simple and tasty flatbread is made with just flour, oil, water, and oil. They are a favorite in the East African region. Give this bread a try for an authentic meal.

11- WEST AFRICAN PEANUT SOUP (MAAFE)  – West African Peanut Soup is a rich, satisfying soup. It is a wonderful, flavorful soup with a unique combination of ingredients and spices. I have adapted the recipe to make it more user-friendly for every kitchen. 

12- AFRICAN CHICKEN STEW – This Chicken Stew is a dish of Nigerian origin. It always includes is chicken, onion, tomatoes, bell peppers, and garlic.

13- NIGERIAN BUNS Nigerian buns are popular street food in Nigeria. They are usually deep-fried in vegetable oil and can be eaten for breakfast with coffee or tea and as a snack any other time of the day.

14- GOMEN WAT – A delicious vegetable stew from Ethiopia. 

15- DORO WAT – This is one of the most popular dishes in Ethiopia. It is a spicy Ethiopian stew made of boiled chicken, onions, and spicy seasoning. It is usually eaten with injera bread.

16- WEST AFRICAN PEPPER SAUCE – The popular spicy condiment known as pepper sauce isn’t just eaten with fries or sprinkled over rice dishes—it’s also used to flavor many savory stews and meat dishes. It’s easy to make your own pepper sauce at home with a few fresh ingredients, and it can add an extra kick to any meal that you enjoy! 

17- AKARA – ACARAJE – Akara is delicious and popular street food in most west African countries and places like Brazil, where it is commonly sold by vendors. It is made with black-eyed peas, peeled, blended, seasoned, and fried.

18- WEST AFRICAN MEAT PIE – The West African meat pie is a savory pastry filled with spiced ground beef, onions, and carrots. You will love the taste of this savory delight!

19- EFO RIRO – Efo riro is a delicious West African dish made of a spicy vegetable stew. While efo riro can be made with different combinations of meat, you can also choose to omit the meat and make it purely vegan.

20- NIGERIAN FRIED RICE – Nigerian fried rice is a staple food of Nigeria. It is made from boiled white rice, then stir-fried in a wok or a frying pan, and is usually mixed with other ingredients such as vegetables, seafood, meat, or other ingredients. It can be eaten on its own or as part of another dish.

21- HOT POT POTATOES – Hot Pot Potatoes are a delicious and nutritious dish from Cameroun. It’s a beautiful version of the beef stew but unique in its own way.

22- JOLLOF RICE – Jollof rice is the most popular traditional dish of West African countries such as Senegal, Benin, Gambia, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Nigeria. It exists in various forms throughout west Africa, and each country has its own variation. The dish itself is a mixture of many ingredients like tomatoes, onions, garlic, bell pepper, and other spices. It has become such a popular dish that it is served and eaten on almost every occasion.

23- KACHUMBARI – Kachumbari is a spicy tomato and onion salad. It’s very popular in Tanzania – as well as in neighboring countries, like Zambia and Kenya. It’s actually is one of my favorite dishes because it’s really tasty, easy to prepare, low-cost. check out the recipe below.

24- YASSA POULET – Yassa Poulet is a Senegalese chicken dish, made with marinated and braised chicken. It’s served over rice or couscous. Yassa is considered a national dish of Senegal.

25- BANGA SOUP is a popular dish in Nigeria. It’s a thick, creamy soup that has many variations depending on the region and chef. Traditionally Banga Soup is served with swallow food like pounded yam and fufu but can also be served over rice.

26- PERI-PERI CHICKEN Peri-peri chicken is a dish well-known around the world. It has become an international phenomenon. In fact, it’s so popular that peri peri sauce can now be found in supermarkets across the globe!

27- EWA RIRO – STEWED BEANS – Stewed beans are a much-loved Nigerian food. The recipe is simple: you take some dry beans (black-eyed peas), boil them for about 10 minutes, then simmer them in water for about an hour or till it becomes tender. Then stew with blended bell pepper and palm oil and season well. They’re delicious! In the recipe post below, a few tips are listed so that your stewed beans turn out truly delicious.

28- BOBOTIE – Bobotie is a traditional South African dish. This classic African casserole is often made with lamb or beef. It can be eaten for breakfast or as a main course for lunch or dinner. It makes for a great family meal, and it’s also easy to prepare.

29- EGUSI SOUP – is a popular dish in Nigeria, as well as other parts of Africa. It’s considered a delicacy and is often served during important life events such as weddings and parties. The typical egusi soup recipe consists of ground melon seeds (egusi), spinach leaves, or any other leafy greens, tomatoes, pepper, onion, and beef or fish depending on individual preference.

30- OKRO SOUP – Okro soup is a typical West African dish that is eaten in Nigeria, Ghana, and other countries in Western Africa. It can e prepared with Fish, beef, chicken, or any other meat of choice.

31- AFRICAN PUFF PUFF – A very addictive snack mostly consumed in West Africa, is the most delicious and addictive. It is usually eaten as is, sprinkled with sugar, or served with a hot sauce that has a very distinct taste. The puff puff is made by mixing flour and water together to form a paste which is then fried to form balls of dough.

32- AFRICAN GOATMEAT PEPPER SOUP – Pepper soup is a popular West African dish made from goat meat and various spices. The soup is cooked with local spices and condiments, this gives pepper soup its distinct flavor. I highly recommend trying this out. It is hot, spicy, and delicious! 

33- NIGERIAN EGGROLLS – Nigerian Egg Rolls are a popular snack in Nigeria. However, since they are very filling, they can be served as breakfast with a cup of coffee or tea. They are also great for brunch with a cup of orange juice!

34- TURKEY STEW – AFRICAN STYLE – If you are looking for a hearty Nigerian stew, look no further. This stew is hearty, quick, and easy to make.

35- HARIRA RECIPE – Harira is a traditional Moroccan lentil and chickpea soup cooked in most homes. It is made with fresh herbs and a variety of warm spices.

36- FOUL MUDAMMAS (Egyptian Fava Beans) – creamy fava beans with cumin, olive oil, and a zippy lemon garlic sauce with chili peppers. Vegan. GF

37- POUNDED YAM  is a staple food eaten by many Nigerian families. If you have ever gone to a traditional Nigerian party, you might have heard of pounded yam. Read on to find out more about this delicious Nigerian food.

38- SHAKSHUKA – Shakshuka is a delicious dish that originated in North Africa and the Middle East. Its main ingredients are tomatoes, peppers, onions, and eggs. The dish is cooked in a skillet or frying pan, where the vegetables are sautéed and then topped with a poached egg that cooks in the sauce.

39- MOIN MOIN this is one of the iconic foods o Nigeria. It is a traditional meal made with peeled beans, peppers and seasoning and steamed to perfection.

40- YAM PORRIDGE – Yam porridge is made from boiled yam, pepper, and salt. It is a very healthy meal that you can have for breakfast or dinner. It is also very easy to make and does not require much time. 

41- MANDAZI – Mandazi recipe is a special type of yeast-raised doughnut that can be found in some countries in east Africa. It is usually eaten as an accompaniment to tea or coffee and it makes for a great snack. 

42- AFRICAN STYLE COCONUT RICE – Coconut Rice is a staple food in many parts of West Africa. It is made with coconut milk and water or stock. It can be served as a side dish or main course and goes equally well with most meat dishes, including roasted chicken, fried fish, grilled lamb chops, and roast pork.

43- MATOKE – (mah-TOH-kay) is a steamed plantain dish that is widely eaten in East Africa. It is made from steamed green bananas, stewed, and seasoned with salt and other spices.

44- GITHERI Githeri is a dish that is cooked in most homes across Kenya. It is however not only served for dinner but is also eaten for breakfast or lunch.

45- MOROCCAN CHICKEN TAGINE – A traditional Moroccan dish that can be found in most middle-eastern restaurants. It’s also delicious and easy to make at home and it doesn’t take long to prepare. It’s particularly delicious served with couscous.

46- MOROCCAN COUSCOUS: The Moroccan couscous is a staple in most North African cuisines. It’s a popular dish for special occasions, and for the everyday family meal. It has a rich, hearty and delicious taste that will you keep coming back for more.

47 – GRILLED PLANTAINS – Your plantain recipe doesn’t have to be boring and bland. Grill the plantain in your oven and enjoy the caramelized goodness. You can eat it alone or pair it with peanuts, cashew nuts or spicy sauce, and fried fish. It is best eaten warm and soft.

48 – SUYA SPICE – If you love spicy food, this suya spice should be your go-to for seasoning. It is a blend of peanuts, garlic powder, ginger powder, cloves, etc. Use the mix to spice your beef, chicken, fish, and potatoes to enjoy its full of flavor and heat.
